Motorcycle Awareness 2003
proclamations campaign

Accross the state of Texas in '03 there were riders getting involved in contacting the Mayor
of their city to have the month of May proclaimed as Motorcycle Safety & Awareness month. The groundwork for these proclamations was set into motion by much hard work on the part of TMRA, who also initiated the Rider Training Program a few years back. The combined efforts of every concerned Texas rider can make a difference in the safety of all. We know
of only 7 proclamations picked up in 2003. The rest were all mailed in to TMRA
-which is commendable and alot of hard work on their part... but not as effective toward increasing driver awareness within these cities as the riders attending the City Council meetings to pick them up in person. Let's do it again -only better..  in 2004
Next year we hope to get alot more media coverage, together we can do this.

Beardog of Arlington ABATE obtained the original Proclamation from former
Mayor L.V. Odom in April. James Cole and DeJae Walling of Chopper Alley
met with a few riders & the newly appointed Mayor Cluck of Arlington who presented a proclamation in person to Arlington riders. Billie Jo of TX 2 Wheeler was there to take this pic & interviewed Mayor Cluck while she was there.
She used this article & pic in her Texas 2 Wheeler magazine... and never released the pic or info to the riders in time to get an article published in the Star Telegram that might have served our purpose for obtaining this proclamation.
July 2003 ~ Dallas, TX
EZ DUZ IT of Big D Gypsy MC
obtained this Proclamation from
Mayor Laura Miller
Sept 2003 ~ Red Oak, TX ... perseverance paid off ...
Mayor Todd Little finally heard our request and set an appt for the last week of May. There seems to be a problem for Mayor Little about which side of the Red Oak City Limit sign you live on as to whether or not motorcycle safety is a valid issue that he wishes to support. There are many Red Oak riders who send their children to Red Oak schools & receive their mail from the Red Oak Post Office who still were not eligible to pick up this proclamation. Seems they are not within the "actual" city limits and no one could tell them just where that line exists. It took around 2 months to find someone qualified to pick up this Proclamaion. Once we found Mitsi Slaymaker to pick up the proclamation, it still took her over a month to have one of her calls returned so she could go get it.   Thanks, Mayor Little.....
